Political,
spiritual, and military triumphs are all a result of the
obedience of a man after God's own heart. Success is the
reward. When sexual sin such as adultery and the sin of
murder are committed though, failure and judgment come. In
the Book of Second Samuel, one such man is found. This
book tells of David's life from his triumphs to his trangressions to his troubles. He reigned in Hebron for
seven and a half years with political triumphs from
chapter 1 to chapter 6. He then reigned in Jerusalem for
33 years from chapter 6 to chapter 24. Chapter 11 is the
turning point of Second Samuel where David committed
adultery and conceived a child with a beautiful woman whom
he lusted after. He then had her husband killed trying to
cover up and hide his sexual sin with this beautiful
woman. After David's crime, he was confronted by a prophet
of God. He confessed his guilt and was restored by God,
but the price David had to pay was still upon him and his
house. Both the baby born to David from his affair with
Bathsheba and Bathsheba died. His son Amnon commits incest
with his 1/2 sister which caused Absalom to murder Amnon.
Absalom then rebels against David and attempts to
overthrow his throne, but because David had repented, God
kept Absalom from pursuing him until David had time to
regroup his force and conquer his own son's army. Second
Samuel is filled insight on the consequences of obedience
and disobedience to God.
